Image rights and editorial use

How images are selected, credited, and reviewed for rights concerns.

The Outer Margins publishes images to accompany cultural commentary, criticism, historical discussion, scientific reporting, and other editorial work.

Images may include original photography, openly licensed material, archival works, official promotional imagery, film and game screenshots, album covers, and other visual references relevant to the subjects discussed.

Copyright remains with the respective creators and rights holders. Where applicable, images are reproduced under licence, with permission, or in reliance on applicable copyright exceptions, including fair use. Attribution is provided where known and appropriate.

We make reasonable efforts to identify sources and respect intellectual property rights. Rights holders who believe an image has been used improperly may contact [email protected] with the relevant details. We will review legitimate concerns and, where warranted, correct the attribution, replace the image, or remove it.

The magazine may be supported by advertising, sponsorships, subscriptions, and reader contributions. Commercial activity does not by itself determine whether an editorial image qualifies for a copyright exception. Reuse of copyrighted editorial images in advertisements, merchandise, or unrelated promotional materials requires a separate rights assessment.
