Some subjects are obscure; others are familiar but have neglected aspects. What one generation remembers may be unfamiliar to another; what is popular in one part of the world may scarcely be known elsewhere, and vice versa. Japanese city pop, for example, was well established in Japan decades before gaining a wider Western audience. The Outer Margins follows these shifting cultural margins across history, science, music, cinema, art, belief and manuscripts.
Our approach is curious without being credulous, and skeptical without being contemptuous. Evidence matters. So does acknowledging uncertainty where the record is incomplete.
Collection entries do not require an accompanying opinion essay. A useful record, a clear description, and reliable links may be enough.
We welcome suggestions and pitches from anywhere in the world: independent music from Fiji, an overlooked film from Senegal, a community archive, a remarkable work of art, or an original piece of writing. Every contribution is reviewed for fit, accuracy, sourcing, rights, and clarity. Not all submissions can be published. Read the contribution guidelines.
Editorial approach
Evidence and uncertainty
We distinguish established evidence, interpretations, hypotheses, speculation, and unsupported claims. Unusual ideas may be examined fairly without being endorsed; strong evidence should not be obscured by false balance.
Sources and corrections
Factual entries should link to original records and reliable secondary sources where available. Corrections and revisions will be made when warranted. Send corrections or source information to [email protected].
AI assistance
AI may assist with drafting, editing, research organization, and illustrations. Human editorial review and responsibility are required before publication. AI-generated images must not be presented as documentary evidence.
Contributions
We welcome international recommendations, pitches, and original nonfiction or fiction where appropriate. Publication is selective, subject to editorial fact-checking, originality and rights review, and possible revisions. No submission guarantees publication. Contributors retain rights unless separately agreed; submission alone grants no commercial reuse or adaptation rights. Read the contribution guidelines.
